Maltese don’t have special demands when it comes to food. All our dog will need is a balanced diet with proteins, carbon hydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals. Don’t over-feed the dog, and try not to indulge their whims too much.
When choosing the right food, the size and age of our dog must be considered. Usually, 100 gr. of dry food or 315-390 Kcal every day should satisfy our dog’s needs.
The Food:
- Meat, can be chicken, bovine, lamb or others (although is not highly recommended). This can be raw or cooked, although pork meat should always be cooked.
- Liver, guts, entrails. It’s a great food, especially for puppies and growing dogs. It should always be cooked.
- Fish is good for growing dogs; it should also be prepared before giving it to our pet.
- Eggs are given to puppies, breeding dogs, and during breastfeeding.
- Milk, just when puppies.
- Is recommendable that all animal by-products to be previously cooked or boiled. The same goes for rice and pastas.
- Veggies and fruits. If you haven’t tried it before, you’ll be surprised to see how much dogs love it. Try with apples, pears, celery, avocado, watermelon (in summer, very refreshing), etc.
- There is a wide variety of prepared food nowadays. Most of them have all the needed, making of it a more convenient and easier way to feed our pet.
- DO NOT forget: Fresh Water. Water is the most important thing for living beings. There should be fresh water at all times. Remember to change the water a few times during the day, to maintain the freshness.
Ref: Maltese food. I have lived 24/7 – 5 yrs. with my male Maltese. ANY people food, creates vomiting and lethargy. Forget anything with Wheat-he is allergic to it. Have run into other owners with Maltese sensitive tummys. I use Wellness Lamb Mix.-I gave him a taste test with Wellmess samples and he chose Lamb. Drinks purifed water in a clean bowl daily.
Due to the dry air in my apartment, my 4 yr old Maltese appears to be itching. She rolls on the carpet as if to scratch.
What should I do? Thanks, Jonnie
When cooking rice or meat is it OK to cook in boullion cube for flavor, ocassionally
I have just bought a 3 month old Maltese dog. I am feeding it, as per vet instructions twice a day, a vegetarian diet. For the last two days the dog is having difficulty passing a stool and a few times I have seen blood. He just does a little at a time, continuously. Would this have anything to do with the food he is eating. I have checked his stool to see if there are any parasites but cannot see anything.
Please don’t feed your dogs avocado – it is toxic, but is quite appealing to dogs. Also toxic are grapes, raisins, currants, macadamia nuts, raw eggs, mushrooms, citrus fruit, green potatoes and tomatoes. However, small chunks of raw carrot are a crunchy delicious treat and keep their teeth and breath fresh too.
I have a 7 year old female maltese… she eats small breed pedigree food, and sometimes she sneaks people food… she never gets sick, and seems healthy.
